More than 100 Israeli settlers attacked the Palestinian village of Jalud in the northern West Bank early Tuesday, injuring three Israeli Border Police officers and prompting condemnation from both the Israeli government and the United States. The confrontation occurred as Israeli military personnel attempted to escort a Palestinian family back to their home after they had been displaced by previous settler violence.

The Israeli military described the incident as involving “more than 100 Israeli rioters” who blocked roads, set tires and Palestinian property on fire, and hurled stones at security forces. The clashes led to minor injuries among three border police officers, with one individual arrested and two minors detained for questioning. According to the military, the violent actions prevented the displaced family’s return, citing earlier nationalist-motivated attacks against them.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned the assault, attributing it to a “small group of rioters” whose actions disrupt both the affected community and security operations. President Isaac Herzog also publicly criticized the attack, labeling it “a moral stain” and an affront to the rule of law—remarks that are uncommon among Israeli officials regarding violence against Palestinians.

The U.S. State Department issued a statement condemning criminal violence by all parties in the West Bank and calling for proper investigations and legal accountability. The attacks come amid rising concerns over an increase in settler violence, which the United Nations reported averaged six incidents daily in the first half of 2026. These acts have included beatings, vandalism, and arson directed at Palestinians.

Additional incidents on Tuesday involved a settler raid on the village of Al-Mughayyir, northeast of Ramallah, where residents reported numerous burned-out vehicles. In the nearby town of Beitunia, dozens of settlers held a prayer gathering with loudspeakers for the Jewish holiday of Sukkot, an event the local mayor described as a “dangerous precedent” amid ongoing settlement expansion efforts. The mayor also noted settlers had installed a caravan and iron gate in the western part of the town.

Later the same day, the Palestinian Red Crescent treated three individuals reportedly assaulted by settlers near Ramallah’s Jamala area, and transported them to a hospital for further care.

Israel has maintained control over the West Bank since 1967, with some 500,000 settlers currently residing alongside approximately three million Palestinians. Settlement expansion has accelerated in recent years, drawing international criticism and sanctions from some Western countries, which Israel has denounced.

Since the outbreak of conflict in Gaza in October 2023, violence across the West Bank has intensified, with Israeli forces and settlers killing over 1,100 Palestinians, including both militants and civilians, according to Palestinian health ministry data. Israeli authorities report that at least 49 Israelis, including civilians and security personnel, have been killed in Palestinian attacks or related military operations during the same timeframe.
