Authorities arrested seven individuals aged 15 to 26 following a series of disturbances involving fireworks in Birmingham city centre on Saturday. The incidents saw large groups of people igniting fireworks in public areas, prompting police intervention amid growing safety concerns.
Eyewitnesses described chaotic scenes, with one witness likening the situation to a “warzone,” as fireworks were set off near bystanders, causing panic and fear. Social media posts showed footage of the disorder, capturing moments of fireworks exploding close to pedestrians and public transport users. One individual shared on the platform X (formerly Twitter) that they encountered widespread fireworks and screaming children while attempting to catch a train.
West Midlands Police responded with a targeted operation designed to maintain order, deploying additional resources and utilizing section 60 powers, which enable officers to conduct stop-and-search actions without suspicion in designated areas. Chief Superintendent Tom Joyce emphasized the importance of prioritizing community safety in the wake of the events.
The arrested individuals face charges linked to possession of rockets, offensive weapons, and assault. Police investigations remain ongoing as authorities assess the circumstances surrounding the disturbance and work to prevent similar incidents in the future.
