Denzer Guzman’s seventh-inning single broke a tie and propelled the Los Angeles Angels to a 5-2 victory over the Oakland Athletics on Sunday at Angel Stadium. The Angels added two insurance runs in the eighth inning, courtesy of RBI singles from Oswald Peraza and Logan O’Hoppe, solidifying their lead.
The rally began after Josh Lowe singled with one out off Athletics left-hander Geoff Hartlieb. Lowe advanced to second on a steal and subsequently scored to give the Angels a 3-2 advantage. Guzman then delivered a sharp grounder down the third-base line that eluded Max Muncy’s glove, allowing the go-ahead run to cross home plate.
Angels reliever Ryan Zeferjahn secured the win by pitching a scoreless seventh inning, striking out two batters and extending his hitless streak to 10 innings. Kirby Yates closed out the game with a perfect ninth, recording his 100th career save by retiring the side in order.
On the mound for Los Angeles, starter Reid Detmers allowed two runs and four hits over 5 2⁄3 innings. He struck out eight and issued three walks, raising his strikeout total to 112 for the season—ranking third in Major League Baseball behind Milwaukee’s Jacob Misiorowski (146) and Toronto’s Dylan Cease (128).
Detmers navigated a challenging eighth inning when he entered a bases-loaded, one-out situation. He struck out pinch-hitter Carlos Cortes with a 100-mph sinker and induced Muncy to fly out, preventing further damage.
The victory marked an important step for the Angels as they continue to build momentum, overcoming strong pitching from the Athletics and capitalizing on timely hitting to secure the win.
