A severe storm struck parts of Cyprus on Saturday, resulting in one fatality and prompting emergency responses along the island’s south-east coast. Authorities reported that a boat was pushed against rocks by high waves near Cape Greco, causing it to sink. The body of the vessel’s skipper was later recovered from the rocky shoreline.

Rescue efforts by the Cypriot Civil Defence included the evacuation of another individual from the turbulent sea via helicopter, according to local media reports. The storm also caused significant disruption on land, with flooding reported on roads and within buildings across various areas of the island. Additional impacts included fallen trees, landslides, and widespread power outages.

The fire service responded to numerous emergency calls related to storm damage throughout the day. Furthermore, the severe weather led to interruptions in air travel, affecting operations at Larnaca and Paphos airports. Hermes Airports, the operator managing both facilities, announced that 11 flights scheduled for Saturday morning were diverted to alternate airports in response to the deteriorating conditions.
