Severe weather disrupted Fourth of July celebrations across the Midwest and Northeast, causing widespread power outages, travel disruptions, and a fatal boating accident at Geneva Lake in Wisconsin.
In Walworth County, Southern Wisconsin, three children died after a private motorboat carrying 10 people capsized amid a sudden and intense storm on the lake. Authorities confirmed that all four children on board were wearing life vests. The boat faced rapidly deteriorating conditions as it attempted to reach safety, but high winds and waves overwhelmed the vessel, which eventually sank. Six adults and one child were rescued, while the three other children were recovered from the water unresponsive despite immediate lifesaving efforts. The incident is under investigation by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and the Geneva Lake Law Enforcement Agency.
Following the incident, Lake Geneva Mayor Todd Krause declared a state of emergency. One additional person suffered minor injuries after being hit by a falling tree amid widespread downed trees and power lines that blocked streets throughout the area. The storm system that swept through the region also caused extensive utility outages.
By midday Saturday, nearly 750,000 utility customers remained without power across Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Ohio, New York, and New Jersey, part of a broader pattern of outages affecting close to one million residents in total. The storms, characterized by strong winds and heavy rain, also led to the cancellation or postponement of holiday events. In Belleville, New Jersey, Mayor Frank Velez announced the cancellation of fireworks and festivities, prioritizing public safety amid hazardous conditions.
In New York and New Jersey, trains were canceled due to damage from fallen trees and debris, further complicating holiday travel. Temperatures, which had briefly cooled in the wake of the storms, rapidly climbed back towards the triple digits across parts of the Northeast by Saturday afternoon, with forecasts indicating additional storms later in the week could bring relief.
The weather disruptions during the Independence Day holiday weekend underscored the sudden and severe nature of the storms, transforming traditional celebrations into emergency situations across multiple states. Emergency services and utility crews continued efforts to restore power and clear roadways as communities began recovery operations.
