A 45-year-old man was sentenced to three years and eight months in prison after attempting to evade arrest by wading into the sea at Porthcawl seafront in Wales. Gavin Bennett was charged with two counts of attempting to engage in sexual communications with a child following reports that he had been sending inappropriate messages to someone he believed to be under 16.
Police were called to the area after receiving allegations related to Bennett’s online conduct. Upon their arrival, Bennett was seen entering the water in an effort to avoid arrest. Officers pursued him into the sea and successfully detained him.
Bennett pleaded guilty to the charges at Cardiff Crown Court. The case highlights law enforcement’s efforts to monitor and respond to online sexual offences involving minors. The court’s sentencing reflects the seriousness with which such offences are treated.
