Seychelles Postal Services (SPS) is undergoing a strategic transformation to adapt to evolving trade and communication trends as it marks 165 years of operation. Under the leadership of CEO Mariella Buisson, the organization is focusing on enhancing its role in e-commerce and international trade, critical factors for the island nation’s economy.

Facing a decline in traditional letter volumes and growing competition from courier companies, SPS has prioritized strengthening its commercial viability to secure long-term financial stability. Buisson emphasized that e-commerce is central to this strategy, serving not only as a channel for online retail but also as a facilitator of imports and exports, which are vital for Seychelles’ predominantly import-dependent market.

A key component of this shift involves deepening ties with the United Arab Emirates. The UAE is a significant source of inbound trade, and SPS collaborates closely with Emirates Post, supported by robust commercial air connections between the two countries. This partnership plays an important role in sustaining Seychelles–UAE trade flows, according to Buisson.

To support these initiatives, SPS is pursuing a digitalization agenda that includes the introduction of online payment systems, development of an e-commerce platform aimed at helping local businesses expand internationally, and the construction of an automated logistics warehouse. These efforts are part of a broader aim to modernize SPS’s operations and ensure the postal service remains relevant in a rapidly changing economic landscape.

Buisson highlighted that the modernization drive is designed to prepare SPS for continued relevance and competitiveness in the decades to come, reflecting the evolving needs of Seychelles’ economy and its growing integration into global trade networks.
