Recyclable collections at the Trash for Cash Hub 3R @ Taman Serina in Sungai Pinang surged by 56.5%, according to figures released by the Penang Island City Council (MBPP). On August 30, 287.65 kilograms of recyclables were collected, up from 183.79 kilograms recorded the previous week.

The programme also saw a notable increase in used cooking oil collection, which nearly doubled to 59.2 kilograms compared to 30 kilograms previously. The collected cooking oil was purchased at a rate of RM3 per kilogram.

Organised by MBPP’s Municipal Services Department in partnership with Riiicycle and Tanjung Synergy, the initiative encouraged the public to separate waste at the source. Collected materials included plastic bottles, paper, cardboard, aluminium cans, textiles, and electronic waste. The textile collection component yielded 60 kilograms, while e-waste included six mobile phones, four laptops, a computer CPU, and two monitors.

The cash reward programme was funded and supported by MBPP councillors Datuk Abdul Razak Abdul Rahman, Rohaizat Hamid, Chan Soon Aun, David Chen Wooi Teong, and Muhamad Nayim Othuman Mydin. Organisers say the drive aims to integrate recycling into everyday routines and raise awareness about proper waste separation and handling. The initiative also highlights the role individuals can play in reducing landfill waste.

Participants who brought more than 5 kilograms of recyclable items, including used cooking oil, were eligible to receive free groceries such as instant noodles and cooking oil. MBPP reported that the initiative’s strong response demonstrates increasing public commitment to responsible waste management, with attendees coming from across Penang and some returning for multiple visits.
