Shane Lowry delivered a commanding performance to capture the Irish Open title with a record-breaking margin at Doonbeg, the golf course owned by former U.S. President Donald Trump. The 39-year-old Irishman finished the tournament with a 72-hole total of 257, setting a new tournament scoring record and securing victory by an unprecedented eleven-shot lead.

Lowry, who previously won the Claret Jug at Royal Portrush in the 2019 Open Championship, began the final round by extending his lead with a 16-foot birdie putt on the first hole. By the eighth hole, he had added three more birdies, reaching 20 under par and opening an eight-shot cushion over his closest competitors. He completed the day with a seven-under-par 63, featuring a 30-foot putt at the final hole to cap off his dominant display.

His 257 aggregate score shattered the previous record held by Scotland’s Colin Montgomerie, who had set a 266 in 1998, lowering it by nine shots. Lowry also surpassed Bernhard Langer’s 1987 mark for the largest winning margin at the Irish Open, achieving an eleven-shot victory that eclipsed Langer’s ten-shot margin.

American Patrick Reed and Chilean Joaquin Niemann finished tied for second place, both carding rounds of 64 on the last day. Reed’s strong finish helped him extend his lead over fellow Northern Irish golfer Rory McIlroy, who tied for 41st place, in the Race to Dubai standings.

Lowry’s victory held added significance given the challenges he faced during the season. Having previously won the Irish Open as an amateur in 2009, he now claimed the first prize of £750,000. The win was celebrated in the presence of President Trump, who offered his applause as Lowry spoke emotionally about the importance of the triumph in a difficult year.
