Shane van Gisbergen secured his position as the winningest active driver in NASCAR road and street course racing with a hard-fought victory at Sonoma Raceway on Sunday. The Trackhouse Racing competitor captured his second straight win at the 1.99-mile circuit located north of San Francisco, extending his dominance on NASCAR’s most technical tracks.
Starting sixth on the grid, van Gisbergen took command of the race in the later stages, leading 74 of the final 83 laps. Despite his strong performance, he faced significant pressure from Chase Briscoe, who finished second behind the wheel of the No. 97 Chevrolet. Briscoe’s car had presented challenges during practice the previous day, but he managed to mount a late charge that nearly disrupted van Gisbergen’s control.
“We were really bad yesterday, and these guys did an amazing job turning this car into a winner,” van Gisbergen said after the race. Acknowledging Briscoe’s threat, he added, “[Briscoe] was coming. He was really, really good, and I ran out at the end. Yeah, a couple more laps, we would have had some problems.”
Van Gisbergen’s victory underscores his proficiency on road courses, where precision and tactical driving are crucial. His performance at Sonoma marks a significant milestone in his NASCAR career, solidifying his status among the sport’s top road course specialists. The race weekend also highlighted the adaptive capabilities of his team, which overcame initial setup difficulties to deliver a race-winning car.
The Sonoma event remains a significant stop on the NASCAR Cup Series calendar, challenging drivers with its combination of tight corners and elevation changes. Van Gisbergen’s latest triumph adds to the narrative of his growing legacy in these races and positions him as a key contender as the season progresses.
