A reusable bag-sharing initiative at Sunshine Central mall in Air Itam, Penang, has seen significant participation since its launch nearly a year ago. The “Take a Bag, Leave a Bag” program encourages shoppers and visitors to borrow reusable shopping bags from a designated corner within the mixed-use complex and to return or contribute their own spare bags for others to use.

The scheme aims to promote sustainability and reduce the reliance on disposable plastic bags, while also providing a convenient option for shoppers who may forget to bring their own bags. Initial reports indicate that around 2,000 bags were collected during the program’s launch, all of which were claimed by users within the first month, highlighting strong demand.

Joseph Ng Soon Siang, the Air Itam assemblyman, visited the site and noted the community’s robust response as an indication of the program’s relevance and value. He explained that the initiative operates on the principle of mutual contribution, allowing individuals without reusable bags to borrow one and encouraging those with extras at home to donate them back into circulation.

Although the bags are provided free of charge, Ng emphasized that ongoing public support in replenishing the supply was essential to maintaining the program. He credited the Penang Green Council, Clarivate, Sunshine Central mall management, and local residents for their continued backing of the effort.

Contributing to awareness efforts, students from Inti International College Penang produced a video to promote the sharing model and encourage broader community participation. Ng expressed hope that such initiatives would gradually foster a cultural shift toward carrying reusable bags regularly, thereby reducing plastic waste.

“We hope this effort can grow gradually with community support,” Ng said, underscoring the importance of collective action in advancing environmental sustainability.
