Sharjah Police have dismantled an international cybercrime gang accused of targeting social media influencers and celebrities across 14 countries by stealing private photos and using them for blackmail. The law enforcement operation was initiated after a single victim lodged a complaint.
Lieutenant Colonel Saqr Ahmed, Head of the Digital Crimes Section at Sharjah Police, said the investigation employed advanced digital forensics, artificial intelligence, and coordinated efforts with international law enforcement agencies. These strategies enabled authorities to map the syndicate’s network, identify its members, and arrest the entire group.
According to Lt. Col. Saqr, the gang operated under the guise of a legitimate online business offering social media verification badges, follower boosts, and account security services. To build credibility, the organization aligned its branding with official state-level institutions. However, the criminals used malicious photo filters embedded in commonly used image editing and sharing applications to extract personal images and account information from victims without their knowledge or consent.
The stolen data was then leveraged to extort victims through threatening phone calls originating from foreign numbers, demanding ransom payments to prevent the release of private photos. Women were reported to be among the most frequently targeted victims. Notably, the syndicate later posed as a protective service, persuading victims to hire the same fraudulent company to secure their accounts or recover stolen images—services that ultimately stemmed from the extortionists themselves.
The network reportedly collaborated with external entities masquerading as technical support organizations. These groups claimed to assist in recovering compromised accounts but allegedly facilitated account breaches and further coercion of victims.
The investigation commenced after a victim filed an official report with Sharjah Police. Response teams at the Digital Crimes Section’s digital intelligence laboratory launched a comprehensive inquiry, working continuously to conduct forensic examinations, track suspicious accounts, and analyze digital evidence. The use of artificial intelligence was instrumental in connecting digital traces and constructing a detailed overview of the syndicate’s operations spanning multiple countries.
International cooperation with law enforcement agencies across the 14 affected nations played a critical role in identifying the members of the syndicate and successfully dismantling the entire network, according to Sharjah Police officials.
