Sharjah authorities have revealed the new design for Al Taawun Square and announced that the junction will open to traffic on November 4, 2026. This reopening is scheduled to coincide with the start of the Sharjah International Book Fair (SIBF 2026), an event expected to attract significant visitor numbers.

Details of the redesigned square, which is framed by traffic-light-controlled intersections, were shared during a recent broadcast of the Direct Line programme. Officials emphasized that reopening Al Taawun Square will facilitate easier access for vehicles, particularly for those traveling to Expo Centre Sharjah, a key venue for the book fair.

The announcement comes amid ongoing construction of the Al Taawun Tunnel project, a major infrastructure upgrade aimed at alleviating chronic congestion in the area. Al Taawun Square marks a critical bottleneck on the Sharjah-Dubai corridor, and the new tunnel is designed to reduce motorists’ waiting times by as much as 85 percent.

The project is being executed in phases, with the first phase targeted for completion and opening in November 2026. The full development is expected to be finalized by February 2027. This project forms part of broader efforts to enhance traffic flow and improve road infrastructure in Al Taawun, one of Sharjah’s most heavily trafficked districts.
