A swimmer in her 30s was critically injured in a shark attack off Coogee Beach, Sydney, on Sunday, marking the latest in a series of recent incidents in Australian waters. The victim sustained serious injuries to her leg and arm before being rescued from the water by other beachgoers. Emergency services then airlifted her to a nearby hospital from a rugby field adjacent to the beach.

This attack follows a troubling pattern along Australia's coastlines in recent months. Since May 16, three spearfishing divers have died from separate shark attacks. Earlier in the year, a 12-year-old boy succumbed to injuries sustained in a bull shark attack in Sydney Harbour, passing away in hospital.

While shark attacks are still relatively rare, Australia records fewer than four fatalities on average each year. Last year, however, the number of deaths rose to five, highlighting concerns among authorities and local communities about increasing encounters between swimmers, divers, and sharks in popular coastal areas.
