A large Bronze Whaler shark was found dead on Semaphore Beach along the Adelaide coastline on Saturday, prompting an investigation by the Department of Primary Industries and Regions (PIRSA) and Shark Watch SA. Authorities responded after the shark was reported but were unable to determine the precise cause of death.
According to a PIRSA spokesperson, the shark exhibited injuries consistent with fishing activities; however, no definitive conclusion could be drawn regarding what led to its demise. The department also clarified that avian influenza, or bird flu, was not a factor, as fish species, including sharks, cannot contract or carry the H5 strain of the virus.
Shark Watch SA noted that large female Bronze Whaler sharks regularly migrate into the Gulf St Vincent in substantial numbers from late spring, often gathering along coastal areas throughout the summer months. These sharks are the most frequently observed species in metropolitan Adelaide waters during this time.
The discovery adds to ongoing monitoring efforts aimed at understanding shark behavior and health in South Australian coastal regions.
