A delegation from the Sheikh Hamad Award for Translation and International Understanding (SHATIU) recently concluded a promotional tour in Brazil aimed at engaging Portuguese-speaking translators and publishers ahead of the award’s 2027 edition. The visit, which included key stops in Rio de Janeiro, focused on fostering collaboration and raising awareness of the award within Brazil’s literary community.
During the tour, the SHATIU delegation met with Laura Di Pietro, founder and editorial director of Tabla, a Brazilian publishing house specializing in Arabic literature. Discussions centered on potential partnerships and encouraging translators associated with Tabla to participate in the upcoming award cycle.
The delegation also visited the National Library of Brazil, where talks with library president Marco Lucchesi emphasized translation’s role in bridging Arab and Brazilian cultures. Lucchesi highlighted the importance of libraries in preserving and promoting shared cultural heritage, reinforcing the award’s mission to deepen cross-cultural understanding.
In addition to these meetings, the delegation conducted two seminars addressing the complexities of translating Arabic literature and the significance of specialized awards in supporting and recognizing the work of translators. The program included a visit to the Royal Portuguese Cabinet of Reading in Rio de Janeiro, noted for its comprehensive collection of Portuguese literary works.
The tour underscored the longstanding historical connections between Arabic and Portuguese cultures, referencing landmark translations such as the Qur’an and Ibn Khaldun’s Muqaddimah. These efforts align with SHATIU’s broader goal of enhancing cultural exchange and dialogue through the discipline of translation.
