Accrington Stanley striker Shaun Whalley has played a role in helping the club maintain an impressive home record as they prepare to host second-placed Cheltenham Town at the Crown Ground. Whalley, 39, credits his persistent efforts over the past three years for convincing head groundsman Ben Kay to allow the grass on the pitch to grow slightly longer, which he believes has contributed to the team’s strong form.
Under the guidance of manager John Doolan, Accrington have lost only once in their last five matches and remain unbeaten at home since early April. Despite sitting just two points above the relegation zone, Whalley remains optimistic, emphasizing the club’s competitive spirit amid financial constraints.
“Nearly every team in our division pays more money than us, so they’re going to have their pick of the players,” Whalley said. “That’s no disrespect to anyone at our club and I quite like being underdogs and fighting against the stronger clubs.” He added that momentum from recent victories has boosted the team’s confidence, driving their aspirations to finish higher in the League Two table.
To bolster attendance for the upcoming match against Cheltenham, Accrington are hoping to attract larger crowds by reducing ticket prices and benefiting from the absence of nearby Premier League and Championship clubs. Whalley expressed hope that favorable weather would also encourage supporters to fill the stands.
Cheltenham arrive at the Crown Ground on the back of a six-game unbeaten streak in League Two and have the chance to move to the top of the table with a win. Manager Steve Cotterill marked the first anniversary of his return to the club this week, reflecting on the timing of his second spell as head coach. “I never knew when it would happen again, but I never wrote it off and sometimes the timing is just right,” Cotterill said.
The contest between the two sides sets up a compelling encounter, with Accrington aiming to defend their home unbeaten run against a Cheltenham side pushing for promotion. Both teams will be looking to capitalize on their recent form as the League Two season reaches a pivotal stage.
