Blanche d’Alpuget, widely recognized for her relationship with former Australian Prime Minister Bob Hawke, was remembered by close friends as a vibrant and intellectually engaged individual who made significant contributions beyond her public profile.

A childhood friend, Sue Kirby, who met d’Alpuget at primary school, described her as an energetic and lively presence from an early age. “She was sparky, so you couldn’t ignore her,” Kirby said, noting that d’Alpuget’s personality left a lasting impression on those around her. Even in her later years, d’Alpuget remained mentally sharp and socially dynamic.

Kirby recounted a recent trip the two shared on a small yacht to Indonesia, where d’Alpuget’s charisma made her the center of attention among other travelers. Their friendship was deeply rooted in their mutual fascination with politics and current affairs, a shared interest that also defined much of d’Alpuget’s relationship with Hawke.

“She was very well informed, well read, and wanted to talk about everything—ideas, politics, a great companion,” Kirby said. D’Alpuget was noted not only for her intelligence but also for her accomplishments as a writer, having received accolades for her literary work.

Unlike some perceptions that focused on her role as Hawke’s partner, Kirby emphasized that d’Alpuget was far more than “the other woman.” She highlighted d’Alpuget’s significant personal achievements and intellectual contributions, suggesting that d’Alpuget would prefer to be remembered for these over her association with Hawke.

On a more personal note, Kirby reflected on discussions they had about mortality. While Kirby openly expressed fear of death, d’Alpuget embraced a belief in an afterlife. “She said to me, ‘I don’t fear death, I know you do, but I am going to a better place,’” Kirby recalled.

D’Alpuget’s passing has left friends mourning but also cherishing the memories of her spirited character and meaningful impact. Kirby described their friendship as one filled with fondness and respect, underscoring a life marked by intellect, warmth, and resilience.
