Sheer black stockings and tights, once largely out of fashion, have made a notable resurgence in recent years, particularly over the last couple of seasons. This revival has been visible on runways and among fashion insiders, signaling a shift away from the bare-legged trend that had become dominant in some circles.

At the recently concluded Paris fashion week, many editors were seen wearing sheer black hosiery, a marked change from their previous preference for exposed legs despite cold weather. Industry experts attribute this growing prevalence partly to the influence of Anthony Vaccarello, creative director at Saint Laurent since 2016. Vaccarello has championed the seductive, retro-inspired look of sheer hose paired with stilettos, drawing on the aesthetic popularized by 1980s photographers like Helmut Newton. His high-profile muses, including Hailey Bieber and Zoë Kravitz, have brought this style to red carpet events and public attention.

The trend is no longer limited to Saint Laurent. Designers such as Antonio Tron at Balmain, Demna at Gucci, Nadège Vanhée at Hermès, and the duo Mike Eckhaus and Zoe Latta of Eckhaus Latta have also incorporated sheer black tights into their collections. This shift coincides with a broader return to skirts and skirt suits, often featuring knee-length or shorter hemlines, as seen in Prada’s recent Milan show, which focused exclusively on skirts rather than trousers.

Retail perspectives align with this fashion movement. Linda Fargo, senior vice president of fashion and director of store presentation at Bergdorf Goodman, noted that sheer tights provide a practical element when wearing skirts that expose a significant amount of leg, offering a protective layer that can reduce the need for additional skin maintenance such as waxing or buffing.

Consumers appear to be embracing the style for both its aesthetic and functional qualities. Sara Moonves, editor of W magazine, described sheer black hosiery as flattering and polished, admitting she had recently adopted the style. Olivia Singer, a British journalist known for her regular use of sheer tights, remarked that the look lends an effortless elegance.

However, durability remains a drawback for many wearers. Both Moonves and Singer acknowledged that, despite protective features and care tips such as freezing or spraying the hosiery to extend wear, sheer tights are prone to runs. Consequently, some, like Singer, purchase multiple packs of tights seasonally to ensure they always have replacements on hand.

The renewed popularity of sheer black hosiery reflects a complex interplay of nostalgic influence, evolving fashion silhouettes, and practical considerations, marking a noteworthy shift within the contemporary fashion landscape.
