Pop star Ed Sheeran is facing a backlash after rapper Macklemore, an outspoken supporter of Palestinian rights, was removed from Sheeran’s ongoing U.S. stadium tour following pro-Palestinian remarks on stage. The decision to exclude Macklemore has led to Sheeran’s opening acts and band members quitting in solidarity with the rapper.
Macklemore was dropped from the tour after making comments during a September 4 concert at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, where he repeatedly called to "Free Palestine" and criticized Israeli government actions in Gaza and the West Bank. He emphasized that his criticism of Israel should not be viewed as criticism of Jewish people, saying, “To all of my Jewish brothers and sisters, criticism of Israel, criticism of apartheid, being against genocide, it in no way is criticism of you.”
The controversy arose amid growing sensitivity around the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, which has sharply divided U.S. public opinion since the Hamas-led October 2023 attack on Israel and the subsequent Israeli military response. Representatives of NFL team owners, whose stadium hosted the concerts, reportedly expressed concerns that Macklemore’s remarks transformed entertainment events into political platforms promoting what they considered hate speech. Though Macklemore was warned to avoid discussing the conflict on the following night’s show, he repeated his message, prompting the promoter and stadium officials to bar him from further performances on the tour.
Sheeran, who traditionally avoids public political statements, clarified on Instagram that the decision to remove Macklemore was made by the tour promoter and venue owners, not by him personally. He also stated that stadium owners threatened to cancel shows if Macklemore remained billed. Sheeran said he tried to mediate a solution but indicated that the final decision rested with the promoter and venue. He described his concerts as spaces for unity, joy, and escapism, free from political discourse, while acknowledging the tragic nature of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and asserting that he cares deeply about it despite choosing to remain publicly neutral.
Following the incident, Macklemore announced he would donate $1 million of his tour earnings to Palestinian relief organizations. Sheeran reportedly pledged $2 million for aid following talks with NFL owner and philanthropist Mark Kraft, who also stated that supporting Palestinians and condemning Hamas, antisemitism, and hate are not mutually exclusive. Kraft emphasized the importance of recognizing the suffering of innocent Palestinians while opposing extremist violence.
Macklemore’s outspoken stance aligns with a broader trend of artists voicing support for the Palestinian cause in recent years. In 2024, performers like Dua Lipa and Kehlani publicly accused Israel of committing genocide, and several musicians, including Chappell Roan, have participated in benefit events for Palestinian relief.
Macklemore reflected on the conflict between his activism and Sheeran’s reluctance to engage politically, describing the situation as challenging for Sheeran, who typically maintains an apolitical public image.
