Sheppey United advanced to the next round of the cup after defeating Beaconsfield in a penalty shootout on Saturday. The match, held at Sheppey’s home ground, ended in a 1-1 draw following regular time, with Sheppey ultimately prevailing 5-4 in the shootout.

The first half was largely uneventful, with both sides struggling to create clear scoring opportunities. However, the game’s dynamics shifted in the second half following an injury to Sheppey player Harley Earle, who was substituted at halftime. With no goalkeeper available on the Sheppey bench, defender Ethan Cole took on the unusual role of goalkeeper for the remainder of the match and the shootout.

Beaconsfield capitalized on the shift, breaking the deadlock in the 53rd minute when midfielder Freddie Ford scored from long range. Despite trailing, Sheppey remained resilient. They secured a late equalizer in the 88th minute when Danny Leonard’s cross allowed the team to level the score, forcing the match into penalties.

The shootout proved tense and extended, with both sides converting eight penalties each before Mikey Salako successfully netted the decisive kick for Sheppey. Cole’s performance between the posts during the second half and the shootout was instrumental in securing the victory.
