Decarrey Sheriff scored twice as Dover Athletic secured a place in the FA Cup first round for the first time in seven years with a 3-2 victory over Dorking Wanderers on Saturday. The contest, the second meeting between the two sides in a week, delivered an intense and closely fought encounter marked by shifting momentum.
Dover took an early lead in the 11th minute when Euan Williams set up midfielder Jack Bates, who curled in his eighth goal of the season from the edge of the box. However, Dorking responded quickly, equalising four minutes later as George Nikaj capitalised on a through ball from Josh Barrett, rounding Dover goalkeeper Mitch Walker to score against his former club.
The deadlock remained only briefly, with Luke Baptiste winning a penalty for Dover after being fouled in the box. Sheriff confidently converted from the spot, placing his shot in the top corner. Dorking had an opportunity to level again when captain James McShane was fouled, earning his side a penalty, but Barrett’s attempt went high and wide ten minutes before halftime.
Early in the second half, Dover extended their advantage. A combination between Bates and Baptiste on the left flank set up Sheriff, who demonstrated alertness to turn inside the penalty area and beat Dorking keeper Glenn Morris with a precise finish. Dorking refused to capitulate, pulling one goal back shortly after the hour mark through Dennon Lewis, whose composed strike revived their hopes.
In the final stages, both teams created further opportunities, but Dover ultimately held firm to claim victory and progress in the competition. The win marks a significant achievement for Dover Athletic, ending a seven-year absence from the FA Cup first round.
