Central Catholic’s girls’ soccer team is entering the final stretch of its 2023 season with senior midfielder Sarah Tressler playing a pivotal role in a near-perfect campaign. Since joining the program three years ago after relocating from California, Tressler has emerged as a two-time captain and a key contributor, helping propel the undefeated Raiders to a 14-0-0 record and a top ranking nationally and within the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA).
Coach Jami Hayden recalls the immediate impact Tressler made upon arriving at Central Catholic. “Within 20 minutes of tryouts starting, we were like, ‘oh, OK, this girl is very special,’” Hayden said, noting that Tressler quickly stood out for her skill and competitive drive. Over four varsity seasons, she developed into a standout player with 24 goals and 10 assists this season alone, drawing recognition as a Globe All-Scholastic and an All-American.
Tressler originally played in a more defensive role but shifted to attacking midfielder to fulfill her desire to be heavily involved in creating scoring opportunities. “I just wanted to have a big role in the team and to be involved in the play a lot,” she explained. She describes herself as versatile and energetic, emphasizing the importance of soccer intelligence to leverage teammates’ strengths.
Teammates and coaches alike praise her work ethic and leadership. Hayden describes Tressler as the “brain” of the team, highlighting her relentless physical presence and refusal to relent. Fellow captain Addison Brosnihan characterized her as “ferocious” and “diligent,” noting Tressler’s ability to win back possession immediately after losing the ball. Senior goalkeeper Sarah Parker echoed this sentiment, emphasizing Tressler’s influence on the team’s morale and performance.
Tressler’s technical ability extends beyond conventional playmaking. She has mastered the flip throw-in, has scored directly from corner kicks, and poses a consistent goal threat from distance. “You just have a feeling whenever she touches the ball like, ‘this is going to be a goal,’” Hayden said.
Despite impressive individual achievements, Tressler and the Raiders remain focused on team success. Central Catholic aims to advance beyond the Round of 16 for the first time in three years, with the program’s previous postseason run ending in a 2-0 loss to Belmont last fall. The team is targeting a top-eight seed to secure home-field advantage for at least two playoff games and is motivated to contend for the state championship.
“This season, especially, we’re really pushing for that,” Tressler said. Hayden expressed confidence that with Tressler leading the midfield, the Raiders have their best chance yet to reach new heights. “She’s just everywhere we need her to be at all times, which is what makes her so special.”
