Since the closure of the Strait of Hormuz following the outbreak of conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran, a critical environmental concern has arisen regarding the impact on marine ecosystems worldwide. A team of marine biologists, led by Professor Mario Tamburri of the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science, has issued a warning about the potential for a significant spread of invasive marine species as a result of the prolonged immobilization of commercial vessels in the area.
More than 1,500 commercial ships have been stationary in the Persian Gulf since February 28, unable to navigate through the strategically vital waterway. Over this extended period, the hulls of these vessels have become extensively encrusted with various forms of marine life, including microbes, algae, and barnacles. This biological accumulation raises the risk that when these ships eventually resume movement, they could unintentionally transport invasive species far beyond their native habitats.
The researchers characterize the situation as a possible “bio-invasion super-spreader event,” noting that the mass movement of contaminated hulls could introduce non-native organisms to new marine environments, disrupting local ecosystems and threatening biodiversity. The scale of the maritime traffic stalled in the Strait of Hormuz—one of the world’s busiest shipping lanes—amplifies the potential geographical spread of such biological invaders.
The study highlights concerns about the broader environmental consequences tied to geopolitical tensions and the ensuing disruption of global shipping routes.
