A shooting in a neighborhood adjacent to a mosque in Columbus, Ohio, resulted in one fatality on Monday, authorities reported. Officials emphasized that the incident was unrelated to the mosque or any activities taking place inside the religious site.
Federal and local law enforcement agencies, including the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), responded to an initial report of a shooting at the mosque, located northeast of downtown Columbus. However, officers later clarified that the shooting occurred in the parking lot of a nearby apartment complex next to the mosque, rather than at the mosque itself.
Sgt. James Fuqua of the Columbus Police Department stated that while there was an event occurring inside the mosque at the time, the shooting was not connected to it. “It’s super important that I make it clear that this shooting had nothing to do with an attack on the mosque itself,” Fuqua said.
The ATF confirmed via a social media post that agents were responding to the shooting report but did not provide additional details. Requests for further information from the ATF were not immediately returned.
Police investigations are ongoing as authorities seek to determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting and identify any suspects involved. No further information on the identity of the victim or possible motive was available at the time.
