A man from West London has been handed a community order following a series of thefts involving small animals and pet supplies. David Delaney, 38, admitted to stealing a guinea pig, a rabbit, and a rabbit cage from pet stores in southern England.
The offenses took place between June and early October at two branches of Pets at Home. Delaney initially took a guinea pig valued at £30 from a store in Waterlooville, Hampshire. Six days later, he returned to the same location and escaped with a rabbit worth £60. In addition, he stole a £54 rabbit cage from a store in Portsmouth during June.
Delaney also pleaded guilty to failing to surrender to custody after being granted bail by Croydon magistrates’ court in the same month as the thefts.
At a hearing in Guildford, magistrates ordered Delaney to complete a community order lasting until March 2028. The sentence includes a nine-month alcohol treatment program and up to 25 days of rehabilitation activity requirement. He was also directed to pay £135 in compensation to the victims and cover £550 in legal costs.
The court’s decision reflects an emphasis on rehabilitation and addressing underlying issues alongside restitution for the thefts.
