Malaysia is set to host the 22nd Icomos General Assembly and Scientific Symposium 2026 (GA2026) in Kuching this October, drawing more than 1,500 delegates from over 130 countries. The gathering will focus on advancing global efforts in cultural heritage conservation, marking one of the largest international heritage events ever held in Malaysia.

Organised by the International Council on Monuments and Sites (Icomos), the assembly will bring together a wide range of professionals including architects, planners, engineers, archaeologists, museum experts, tourism specialists, academics, conservation practitioners, and representatives of civil society. The goal is to foster interdisciplinary collaboration and to strengthen national and international engagement in protecting historic buildings, towns, and cultural sites.

The event underscores Malaysia’s commitment to showcasing its diverse cultural heritage while promoting sustainable tourism and professional exchange. Datuk Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, Sarawak’s Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, highlighted the significance of the symposium for both the state and the country. He said the assembly offers an opportunity to present Sarawak’s living heritage and cultural diversity on an international platform while reinforcing the region’s role as a cultural and sustainable tourism destination.

Faisal Abd Rahman, president of Icomos Malaysia, described hosting GA2026 as a “once-in-a-generation” opportunity for the nation. He emphasised the importance of building lasting partnerships through the event, noting that heritage conservation today involves collaboration across multiple disciplines. According to Faisal, the future of heritage preservation depends on cooperation among architects, archaeologists, planners, communities, universities, practitioners, governments, and civil society organisations.

The National Heritage Department has recognised GA2026 as a programme of national importance and pledged full support for Malaysia’s role as host. The assembly will also coincide with Unesco’s 80th anniversary, featuring public programmes, exhibitions, and community engagement activities that celebrate the milestone.

GA2026 will take place in Kuching from October 17 to 24, under the theme “Living Heritage: Respect, Enhance, Accept, Partnership.” Further details on the event are available at www.icomosga2026.org.my.
