Preparations for the 2026 Maybank Championship are advancing steadily as the Malaysian golf calendar’s premier event approaches. Scheduled to take place at Kuala Lumpur Golf & Country Club’s West Course from October 29 to November 1, the tournament will feature a strong field that includes five Malaysian players alongside some of the world’s top-ranked golfers.
Defending champion Miyu Yamashita is set to lead the lineup, aiming to replicate her impressive performance from last year. The 25-year-old Japanese golfer has entered the event in outstanding form. In recent weeks, she has secured multiple victories and high finishes across both the LPGA and Japan LPGA tours. Her latest triumph at the Sony Championship pushed her to fifth place in the Rolex Women’s World Rankings. Earlier this year, Yamashita won twice on the LPGA Tour, including a playoff victory over England’s rising star Lottie Woad at the Meijer LPGA Classic in June. Woad, ranked seventh globally, is also expected to compete at the Maybank Championship.
The tournament will draw other notable players such as Thailand’s Jeeno Thitikul, currently ranked second worldwide and twice a runner-up in Kuala Lumpur; South Korea’s Haeran Ryu, third in the rankings and a two-time major winner this season; China’s Ruoning Yin (sixth); England’s Charley Hull (eighth); and Australia’s Hannah Green (tenth). New Zealand’s Lydia Ko, a three-time major champion and Olympic gold medalist, will also add significant star power to the field.
The Maybank Championship continues to serve as a critical platform for Southeast Asian golfers aspiring to compete on the global stage. The recent ASEAN Qualifier, held at KLGCC in August, saw Thai professional Pimnipa Panthong and amateur golfers Sarisa Pojanai and Achiraya Sriwong earn their spots in the main event by finishing tied atop the leaderboard. Sriwong has since turned professional. Marisa Tojai and Malaysia’s Liyana Durisic also qualified, with Liyana in particular coming off a strong season in which she claimed four titles on the Professional Golf of Malaysia (PGM) Tour and secured a victory in Australia’s Women’s World Sand Greens Championship.
Malaysia’s contingent will be further bolstered by a mix of emerging talent and seasoned players, including Mirabel Ting, Jeneath Wong, Natasha Oon, and Kelly Tan, all competing through sponsors’ exemptions. Twenty-year-old Mirabel Ting is preparing to join the LPGA Tour next season after a successful rookie year on the Epson Tour, highlighted by two wins and 11 top-10 finishes.
The tournament features a prize purse of US$3 million and is regarded as the leading golf event in the ASEAN region. Organizers emphasize the event’s role in uniting international stars, regional talent, sponsors, and fans to foster development across Southeast Asian golf.
