An inquest has revealed new details surrounding the death of Carolyn (Carol) Foord, a renowned figure in Adelaide’s fashion industry, who died in June 2024 following a cardiac arrest during a so-called “healing session” at her home in Alberton.
Ms Foord, who had been in remission from cancer, experienced a deterioration in her health in 2022 when she was diagnosed with motor neurone disease. In an effort to find alternative relief, she turned to the use of psilocybin, commonly known as magic mushrooms. She was connected with Noah McKenna, who described himself as a “Shaman” and claimed expertise in magic mushroom therapies, despite lacking any formal medical qualifications or authorization to prescribe controlled substances.
On June 15, 2024, Mr. McKenna visited Ms Foord’s residence to conduct the healing session. According to statements made during the inquest, Ms Foord’s partner, Con Ninos, noticed her becoming pale and restless shortly after lunch. Mr. Ninos said he was initially reassured by Mr. McKenna that her symptoms were temporary and that she merely needed to vomit. “I thought she was in good hands... I trusted him,” Mr. Ninos told the court.
However, when Mr. Ninos checked on Ms Foord again later, Mr. McKenna instructed him to call emergency services. During the 000 call, which was played to the court, Mr. Ninos reported that Ms Foord was unconscious but did not disclose her use of magic mushrooms. When questioned, Mr. Ninos stated that Mr. McKenna had told him beforehand not to mention the mushrooms, saying, “You can’t say anything about the mushrooms.” Mr. Ninos also alleged that Mr. McKenna indicated a need to “hide some things” before paramedics arrived, though Mr. Ninos could not confirm whether anything was actually concealed. He expressed deep regret for not informing emergency responders about the psilocybin use at the time.
Ms Foord was subsequently taken to hospital, where she died shortly after the cardiac arrest occurred. The inquest was told that Mr. McKenna faced charges related to supplying an unapproved drug, though these charges were not pursued. He declined to provide evidence during the proceedings.
The coroner’s investigation into the circumstances of Ms Foord’s death is ongoing.
