The Shura Council participated in the 43rd session of the Executive Committee of the Arab Inter-Parliamentary Union (AIPU) held on Sunday in Cairo. The council's delegation included Dr. Sultan bin Hassan Al Dhabit Al Dosari, a member of both the Shura Council and the AIPU Executive Committee, as well as HE Dr. Hamda bint Hassan Al Sulaiti, deputy speaker of the Shura Council. Dr. Hamda is also a member of the Executive Committee of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and serves as vice-president of the committee representing the Arab Group at the IPU.

During the session, the committee reviewed a range of agenda items, including reports from specialized committees and an overview of the Union’s activities presented by the General Secretariat for the recent period. Discussions included a proposal to amend the voting mechanism for emergency items at meetings of the IPU General Assembly, aimed at potentially streamlining decision-making processes.

The session also addressed a proposed initiative designed to enhance parliamentary cooperation among member states within the framework of the Union of Councils representing the Organization of Islamic Cooperation. Further, the committee considered a request from the Interparliamentary Assembly of the Commonwealth of Independent States (IPA CIS) to grant the AIPU observer status, which could strengthen interregional parliamentary dialogue.

Additionally, the committee deliberated on the candidacy for the position of President of the IPU. An emergency item prepared by the Arab Parliamentary Group for submission at the 153rd IPU General Assembly, scheduled for October in Arusha, Tanzania, was also reviewed.

The session underscored ongoing efforts to foster collaboration and mutual support among Arab and international parliamentary bodies, reflecting the broader objectives of the Arab Inter-Parliamentary Union to enhance legislative coordination and political dialogue across the region and beyond.
