A spacecraft crashed into the western edge of the Moon facing Earth in an event that occurred recently, generating significant scientific interest. The craft, part of a US-Japanese mission launched by SpaceX in January 2025, had previously delivered two lunar landers before its uncontrolled descent. NASA scientists are awaiting photographic or physical evidence of the crash, expected over the following 24 hours.
The collision produced an explosive impact estimated to be equivalent to about 15,000 sticks of dynamite, resulting in a new lunar crater approximately 90 feet (27 meters) in diameter. While too small to be observed directly from Earth, the crater is anticipated to be visible to lunar orbiters or other spacecraft. Dust and debris from the impact are likely to have risen several miles above the Moon’s surface and may be detected with ground-based telescopes.
Astronomers in the eastern United States, Canada, and much of South America were positioned to have the best opportunity to witness a flash of light from the impact itself. Rodrigo Palominos, a telescope operator at the Paranal Observatory in Chile, reported detecting changes in certain emission lines at the predicted time of impact, indicating measurable disturbances in the lunar environment.
Experts have weighed in on the implications of the crash. Benjamin Fernando of the Los Alamos National Laboratory highlighted the importance of studying such impacts to better assess the hazard posed by orbital debris to future astronauts. Retired astrophysicist Jonathan McDowell acknowledged that the current impact poses no direct threat but cautioned against leaving rocket stages in unstable orbits, which could lead to future uncontrolled lunar impacts.
This marks the second known spacecraft to collide with the Moon. In 2022, a Chinese rocket segment struck the far side of the lunar surface, creating two new craters. The recent crash underscores ongoing concerns about the growing amount of orbital debris and its potential risks. Jennifer Millard, an astronomer at Fifth Star Labs, described the incident as a "red flag" regarding debris management in space.
