Sunderland midfielder Chris Rigg has expressed optimism about the club’s prospects for the current season, indicating that the team has ambitions to compete for trophies. Speaking after Sunderland’s recent victory over Hull City in the Carabao Cup, which secured their progression to the fourth round, Rigg highlighted the squad’s focus on achieving success across multiple competitions, including the Europa League.
Although his appearances this season have been mostly limited to cup fixtures, Rigg, now in his third season under head coach Régis Le Bris, has seen significant personal growth. The academy graduate has developed from a promising Championship-level talent into a Premier League-caliber midfielder during his time at the club. Despite limited game time, he praised Le Bris’s intense tactical preparation and the support provided to the squad, particularly to new players adapting to the team's style.
“Obviously, you set your many targets when you first start the season, but really, like as a group, we just want success,” Rigg said. “Whether that’s silverware, whether that’s winning as many games as we can, whatever. I think we just want success and stay happy and healthy and win games.”
Rigg emphasized the exhaustive work undertaken by Le Bris and his coaching staff, noting the effort invested daily in crafting game plans and strategies aimed at maximizing Sunderland’s performance on the pitch. He described the head coach as deeply involved in both individual and team development, helping integrate newcomers and ensuring consistent tactical awareness across the squad.
This level of preparation is seen as pivotal to Sunderland’s ambitions for the season, as the club balances domestic cup competitions with their commitments in the Europa League. With the squad strengthened ahead of a demanding campaign, Sunderland aims to translate intensive training and tactical planning into tangible success as the season progresses.
