“Sinatra The Musical,” a new production celebrating the life and music of Frank Sinatra, is set to open at London’s Aldwych Theatre on June 24. The West End show explores the singer’s early career, personal relationships, and comeback, featuring more than 20 of his well-known songs, including “Come Fly With Me,” “That’s Life,” and “One For My Baby.”

The musical begins with a portrayal of a 27-year-old Sinatra performing at New York’s Paramount Theatre on New Year’s Eve, 1942, a pivotal moment that launched him into stardom. It then traces the highs and lows of his rising fame, including the deterioration of his marriage to Nancy Sinatra and his tumultuous affair with Hollywood actress Ava Gardner, whom he later married. The narrative highlights Sinatra’s struggle to maintain his career, culminating in what is described as “the greatest comeback in showbiz history.”

Tina Sinatra, Frank’s younger daughter and a co-producer of the show, emphasized the personal and intimate nature of the production. She noted that while her father once remarked that myths were more interesting than truth, this musical aims to present a candid and nuanced view of his life. Tina Sinatra described the dynamic between her parents and Ava Gardner as complex and chaotic, reflecting what she witnessed growing up.

The cast includes Joel Harper-Jackson as Frank Sinatra, Phoebe Panaretos as Nancy Sinatra, and Ana Villafañe portraying Ava Gardner. Harper-Jackson described the production as “a very human story,” acknowledging the openness granted by Tina Sinatra to reveal Sinatra’s flaws without glossing over difficult aspects of his life. Villafañe highlighted the show’s blend of song and storytelling, expressing hope that audiences will leave both entertained and enlightened. Panaretos mentioned that the production has already sparked interest among younger generations, referencing conversations among London commuters about bringing children to see the show.

Joe DiPietro, a two-time Tony Award-winning writer, penned the script, while triple Tony Award-winning director and choreographer Kathleen Marshall leads the production. The musical features live accompaniment by a 17-piece orchestra.

Frank Sinatra, renowned for his distinctive voice and classics such as “My Way” and “Strangers in the Night,” passed away in 1998. This musical seeks to offer audiences both a celebration of his musical legacy and an intimate glimpse into the personal struggles behind the public persona.
