A new community initiative called Sinema Raya is providing a platform for local film enthusiasts in Malaysia to engage in thoughtful discussions about cinema while fostering a sense of connection and cultural appreciation. Founded by Puteri Nuraaina Balqis and Nur Hafizh, the group aims to create a welcoming environment where participants can explore films, discover new perspectives, and build friendships.

Many members joined Sinema Raya seeking a space to talk about films beyond the often contentious online forums. One participant shared that she initially realized she had not watched many Malaysian films but found the group encouraging and informative when she sought recommendations. She highlighted how the discussions allowed her to gain a deeper understanding of Malaysian culture’s diversity, while also forming meaningful social connections.

Sessions are carefully structured to promote inclusive dialogue. Participants are divided into small groups of five to discuss a specific topic for about an hour. These smaller discussions then transition into a larger circle to reflect on the theme more broadly. Between these sessions, the founders open the floor to group sharing, encouraging diverse viewpoints and mutual respect.

Regular attendee Vimala Shanmugam, 28, praised the format and the group’s atmosphere, emphasizing the stark contrast to divisive conversations often found on social media. She noted that Sinema Raya fosters an environment where differing opinions are accepted without conflict, allowing members to share their thoughts freely and bond over a shared interest in films. Vimala also mentioned that the in-person nature of the group helps replace screen time with meaningful community interaction.

Puteri Nuraaina Balqis said the vision behind Sinema Raya is to provide a space where individuals can explore their identities, forge new friendships, and deepen their appreciation for cinema. “Films are filled with so much magic, and we hope to at least play a small part in cultivating the cinema culture here,” she said.

By combining structured discussions with a supportive atmosphere, Sinema Raya represents a growing movement toward nurturing local film communities in Malaysia, enriching both cultural awareness and social connection among its members.
