In 2022, Emmerald Barwise, a single mother and vintage pin-up model, turned to online platforms in an effort to support herself and her 13-year-old daughter amid financial difficulties. She initially joined OnlyFans, a subscription-based content site popular among creators, including a substantial number of single mothers, with around 18 percent of its estimated 4.6 million users reportedly fitting this demographic.
Barwise approached the platform with clear personal boundaries, opting not to produce explicit content despite demand. She recounted frequent requests from subscribers seeking sexually explicit videos and images, occasionally accompanied by offers of thousands of pounds. However, she maintained her stance, emphasizing content she felt comfortable sharing and setting firm limits.
Despite her efforts, Barwise said her earnings on OnlyFans were limited, generally amounting to £200 to £300 per month. Many subscribers would pay the £5 fee but cancel their subscriptions after a month, dissatisfied with content that did not meet their expectations for explicit material.
As pandemic restrictions eased, Barwise found a different form of income through what she refers to as “sugar dating,” where men paid for her company during social outings such as dinners or theater visits. These arrangements, she said, involved no sexual activity and were compensated at rates of up to £300 per hour. Barwise took precautions, including involving her father, who accompanied her to meetings for safety reasons.
Barwise eventually left OnlyFans after six months and joined a sugar dating platform, viewing her role as a paid companion offering a “girlfriend experience” without sex. She typically spent about three hours with clients, meeting clients about twice weekly. While she stated she would not charge extra for consensual sexual activity if it occurred, she reported that none of her relationships progressed to that point.
She acknowledged the challenges of maintaining boundaries, noting that some clients pushed for more intimacy, misconstruing their arrangements as genuine relationships rather than transactions. One client, a 54-year-old businessman named Richard, met her regularly over the course of approximately a year for multi-hour dinners.
Barwise’s experience highlights the complex intersection of online adult content creation and compensated companionship, shedding light on the financial pressures faced by some single parents and the varied approaches to earning income within the expanding digital and personal service economies.
