Jannik Sinner has announced the appointment of Magnus Norman as his new coach, set to succeed Darren Cahill at the end of the current season. The 41-year-old Swedish coach will join Sinner’s team in December, following the conclusion of his long-standing collaboration with Swiss player Stan Wawrinka.

Sinner, the Italian tennis star, has been sidelined since July, after winning his fifth grand slam singles title at Wimbledon, due to a knee injury. He confirmed earlier this month that he would not return to competitive play before the season’s end. Meanwhile, his search for a new coach has continued in the background.

Cahill, 61, a highly respected figure in tennis coaching circles, initially planned to retire last year. However, he agreed to extend his coaching tenure for one more season to support Sinner. Cahill, who has previously guided players such as Lleyton Hewitt, Andre Agassi, and Simona Halep to world number one rankings, will step down at the close of this season. Simone Vagnozzi, who has shared coaching duties with Cahill, will continue working alongside Norman.

Norman’s history with Wawrinka has been notably successful; the Swede, a former world number two, began coaching the Swiss player in 2013. Under Norman’s guidance, Wawrinka captured three grand slam titles over three years. With Wawrinka retiring after his final ATP tournament in Basel this week, Norman becomes available to take on new coaching responsibilities.

Several top ATP players reportedly sought to secure Norman’s coaching services following Wawrinka’s retirement announcement. Norman and Sinner’s team had previously explored a collaboration in 2022 but did not formalize the partnership at that time. The new coaching arrangement could mark a significant phase in Sinner’s continuing professional development as he aims to recover fully from injury and maintain his status among the sport’s elite.
