Sir Anthony Hopkins, the acclaimed actor best known for his portrayal of Hannibal Lecter in *The Silence of the Lambs*, has signed a new record deal as a classical music composer at the age of 88. The Welsh-born actor and musician has partnered with Decca Classics to release *Life Is a Dream*, a collection of orchestral pieces reflecting more than six decades of composition.

The album, scheduled for release on August 21, features performances by the Philharmonia Orchestra under the direction of Grammy-winning conductor Gustavo Dudamel. It also includes contributions from pianist Sergio Tiempo, cellist Gregorio Nieto, The Bach Choir, and the Boy Choristers of Winchester Cathedral. This release follows Hopkins’ earlier musical project, *Composer*, which he issued in 2012 with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra.

Hopkins began playing piano at the age of four and has described music as his "first desire" and lifelong passion. Many of the compositions on *Life Is a Dream* have personal significance, inspired by his upbringing in Port Talbot, Margam, south Wales, and memories of his family and surroundings. The lead single, “Bracken Road,” evokes the landscape and atmosphere of his childhood environment, framed as a nostalgic musical portrait of the streets, meadows, and mountains around his family home in the 1940s.

The actor-composer also explained that “Bracken Road” pays homage to the slow movement of Elgar’s Symphony No. 1 and draws inspiration from other classical figures such as George Butterworth, Debussy, Mahler, and jazz musician Harry James. The piece’s main melody originally featured lyrics expressing a plaintive mood, indicating Hopkins’ melodic and emotional intentions.

Other works on the album include “My Fatherland,” a tribute to Wales and his humble origins as the son of a baker, along with intimate compositions dedicated to family members, such as “Stella” for his wife and “Tara” for his niece. Hopkins highlighted the deep personal connection he feels toward these pieces, noting that some have stayed with him for decades.

Laura Monks, president of Decca Classics, described securing Hopkins as a significant achievement, praising his vast musical knowledge and the emotional depth his compositions bring. The collaboration with the Philharmonia Orchestra and Dudamel has been characterized as a "once-in-a-lifetime experience" by Monks and a fulfilling artistic milestone for Hopkins himself.

Hopkins’ turn toward music has been a continuous thread throughout his life, though only recently receiving prominent recognition. Last year, he debuted live musically with a concert performed by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in Saudi Arabia, following the loss of his home in California wildfires. For Hopkins, composing and performing music represents a pathway to inner peace and creative expression beyond his celebrated acting career.
