Jeremy Clarkson played a key role in helping Sir Chris Hoy raise £1 million for cancer charities by encouraging additional donations from wealthy guests who arrived at a recent fundraising event by helicopter. The event, held last month at a clay pigeon shoot in Northamptonshire, was organized to support the Tour De 4 challenge, a charitable initiative founded by Sir Chris after his diagnosis with terminal prostate cancer.
Sir Chris, a six-time Olympic champion track cyclist, revealed the fundraising total had reached around £850,000 through ticket sales, table bookings, and auction bids. Wanting to reach the £1 million mark, Clarkson, who recently disclosed his own experience with early but aggressive prostate cancer, intervened by asking those guests who had arrived by helicopter to contribute an extra £10,000 each. This approach resulted in an additional £150,000 donated, pushing the total funds raised to £1 million.
Speaking about Clarkson’s intervention, Sir Chris described it as “astonishing,” noting that few people would have been able to make such a request successfully, but credited Clarkson’s strong presence and charisma for making it possible. The event combined fundraising with a social gathering and was described as “really good fun” by Sir Chris.
Clarkson, 66, publicly announced his prostate cancer diagnosis in June during an episode of his popular Prime TV show, "Clarkson’s Farm." He underwent surgery to remove part of his prostate and has since stated that he is in remission. Sir Chris, 50, disclosed his own diagnosis of terminal prostate cancer in 2024 and founded the Tour De 4 cycling challenge with his wife, Sarra. The initiative aims to show that a stage-four cancer diagnosis does not define a person’s potential or achievements.
The Tour De 4 offers participants a choice among four cycling routes, ranging from a static challenge to distances up to 56 miles. The inaugural ride, held near Glasgow last September, raised more than £3.1 million for cancer research. The couple is preparing for the second edition of the event scheduled for this September, with proceeds benefiting multiple cancer charities including Macmillan Cancer Support, Breast Cancer Now, Cure Leukaemia, Prostate Cancer UK, and Maggie’s.
The collaboration between Clarkson and Sir Chris highlights a shared commitment to raising awareness and funds for cancer research and support services through innovative and engaging events.
