Lawyer and activist Siti Kasim has officially joined Parti Bangsa Malaysia (PBM), marking her first formal entry into party politics. She described the move as an opportunity to effect change from within the political system and advance her long-standing advocacy for a fairer and more inclusive Malaysia.
In a statement posted on social media, Siti emphasized that joining PBM represents a new chapter in her efforts to promote a political culture that prioritizes people’s rights and dignity regardless of race, religion, or social connections. Until now, she had maintained her independence, valuing the freedom to speak out and act according to her principles without being tied to any party.
Siti said the decision to join PBM came after assurances from the party’s leadership that her independence and freedom to express her views would be respected. “My principles and my voice are not conditions I am prepared to surrender for political membership,” she said. She reaffirmed her commitment to continuing her work on issues such as the rights of the Orang Asli community, constitutional freedoms, and equality—areas she has championed for years.
Highlighting her intent to hold leaders accountable regardless of political affiliation, Siti stated that joining a party does not grant anyone immunity from scrutiny. “I will continue to speak up against injustice and hold those in power accountable, including those on my own side,” she added.
Speaking to reporters, Siti explained that her primary motivation for entering politics is to effect change by working within Parliament, where she believes she can push for reforms and influence decision-makers directly. She stressed that her sole condition for joining PBM was that she be allowed to remain active in the causes she has long supported without interference.
Siti also cited PBM’s lack of political baggage as a key factor in her decision. She praised the party for its consistent advocacy for the implementation of the Malaysia Agreement 1963, a cause that aligns with her own views.
With this move, Siti Kasim aims to translate her activism into tangible political outcomes, reinforcing her commitment to advancing the rights and freedoms of all Malaysians through legislative means.
