Six Flags Great Adventure in Jackson, New Jersey, announced plans to debut Bakunawa, a new floorless roller coaster that is set to break six world records when it opens in 2027. Named after a mythical sea serpent from Philippine folklore, the coaster will reach a height of 382 feet and attain speeds up to 100 miles per hour, featuring a dynamic ride experience that includes spinning in multiple directions—upright, inverted, and sideways.

The ride’s design includes a 90-degree vertical ascent to the tower’s peak, followed by a unique motion where riders slide around the structure’s exterior before losing speed, then repeating the sequence in reverse. Mike Fehnel, president of Six Flags Great Adventure, described this portion of the ride as “terrifying and amazing,” highlighting the distinctive nature of the attraction.

Introduced on July 28 to media and online content creators, the coaster—formerly known under the working title Project Purple—is still under construction. The code name was chosen as part of an initiative to raise awareness for pancreatic cancer. Enthusiasts and industry observers have expressed significant interest in how the Jackson park would deliver a novel thrill ride, and early reactions suggest it will push the boundaries of spinning coaster design.

Bakunawa is expected to hold records for the fastest and tallest spinning coaster, the fastest inversion, the longest stall inversion, the first floorless spinning coaster, and the first upside-down launch on a spinning coaster. Ryan Chin, a theme park content creator who attended the reveal event, noted the ride’s originality, particularly its upside-down launch and spinning trains, calling it “totally different” from other coasters.

The new attraction aims to attract thrill-seekers and help maintain Six Flags Great Adventure’s reputation for pushing innovation in the amusement park industry. The park has not disclosed an official opening date beyond the 2027 season but plans to complete construction in time for its scheduled debut.
