Six Flags Over Texas officially opened its newest roller coaster, Tormenta: Rampaging Run, on Thursday, following a short delay from its initially scheduled debut on June 26. The ride, themed after the Spanish running of the bulls, is a 309-foot-tall giga dive coaster and sets multiple world records, according to the park.

Tormenta is promoted as the tallest, longest, and fastest dive coaster in the world. Key records include the tallest vertical drop of 309 feet, a beyond-vertical drop of 95 degrees reaching 285 feet, a top speed of 87 miles per hour, the highest Immelmann inversion at 218 feet, the tallest vertical loop at 179 feet, and the longest dive coaster track at 4,199 feet. The ride features a unique experience in which riders are held at the edge of the lift hill before plummeting downward, providing panoramic views of the Dallas skyline followed by intense drops and multiple inversions.

The coaster was developed as part of a $1 billion capital investment plan revealed after Six Flags merged with Cedar Fair, another theme park operator. Fort Worth-based H3 Construction managed the build, employing primarily local workers, while the design and engineering were provided by Swiss firm Bolliger & Mabillard. Six Flags executives have described this as the largest single investment in the park’s history.

To accommodate the new coaster, the park retired the swinging boat ride, The Conquistador, and upgraded the surrounding Spain-themed area, which now features restored fountains, refreshed theming, improved dining options—including barbacoa tacos—and renovated attractions such as the teacup ride.

Park president Pete Carmichael emphasized the significance of Tormenta for both the park and the Dallas-Fort Worth community, calling it a “transformational experience” that elevates the guest experience. The ride’s opening comes as Six Flags works to recover from pandemic-related challenges and manage financial pressures following the recent merger.

Local officials have praised the development. Arlington mayor Jim Ross highlighted Six Flags’ ongoing commitment to the community, noting recent enhancements beyond the new coaster, including improved restrooms, restaurants, cleanliness, and overall park maintenance.

Media previews of Tormenta took place on Wednesday, revealing a high-adrenaline experience that combines thrilling drops and inversions with expansive views and thematic storytelling designed to attract visitors from across the region and beyond. The ride is now open to the public daily starting at 11 a.m.
