The Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB), the main opposition party in Sri Lanka, has prepared a no-confidence motion against Speaker Jagath Wickramaratne, citing 46 separate allegations. This decision emerged following a recent meeting of the SJB parliamentary group, which included input from MPs and legal advisors who helped draft the motion.

According to sources within the SJB, the move comes in response to what they describe as repeated violations of the Constitution and other laws by the Speaker. Key accusations outlined in the motion include the illegal acquisition and use of a second official residence, mismanagement of state finances resulting in financial losses, improper use of public funds, and deliberate breaches of the Standing Orders and parliamentary traditions.

Chief Opposition Whip Gayantha Karunathilaka confirmed the preparation of the no-confidence motion but indicated that the exact date for its submission to Parliament has yet to be decided. This timing will be determined in an upcoming meeting of the SJB’s parliamentary group.

The proposed motion marks a significant escalation in parliamentary confrontations, reflecting deep political tensions. At this stage, there has been no official response from Speaker Wickramaratne or government representatives regarding the allegations or the impending motion.
