Private healthcare institutions are playing an increasingly significant role in addressing the complex healthcare needs of Selangor’s growing and aging population, according to Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari. Speaking at the official launch of Sunway Medical Centre Damansara (SMCD) in Kota Damansara on October 1, 2026, he emphasized the importance of private hospitals in enhancing healthcare capacity and providing specialised treatments.
Amirudin highlighted that SMCD’s strategic location, with connectivity through major road networks, offers convenient access to specialist medical services for residents and workers in the area. He underscored the value of partnerships between government bodies, private healthcare providers, educational institutions, and industry stakeholders to develop a resilient and innovative healthcare ecosystem.
The hospital, operated by Sunway Healthcare Group, has been serving the Klang Valley region since commencing operations in December 2024. With over 370 beds, SMCD offers a wide spectrum of specialty services including orthopaedics, spine care, cardiology, neurosciences, digestive health, ear, nose and throat (ENT), oncology, plastic and reconstructive surgery, as well as women’s and children’s health. Additional services encompass maternity and paediatric care, chemotherapy, haemodialysis, rehabilitation, and diagnostic facilities.
Sunway Healthcare Group president Datuk Lau Beng Long noted that SMCD has progressively expanded its medical capabilities, supported by advanced diagnostic technologies such as AI-assisted 3 Tesla MRI, dual-source CT scans, robotic-assisted knee replacement, and O-arm navigation systems. The hospital also features 60 specialist consultation suites, eight operating theatres, a 24-hour Accident and Emergency department, intensive and high-dependency care units, and a cardiac catheterisation laboratory.
Looking ahead, SMCD plans a significant expansion to further enhance its capacity and services. The next development phase involves the completion of Levels 11 and 12, with Level 11 scheduled to begin operations in the first quarter of 2028. Upon completion, the hospital’s total bed capacity is projected to reach 375.
Additionally, over 1.6 hectares of adjacent land have been allocated for future projects, including a dedicated cancer and nuclear medicine centre as well as the Sunway Sanctuary, an assisted living facility for seniors. The proposed cancer centre aims to house cutting-edge equipment such as a cyclotron, PET-CT scanner, linear accelerator, CT simulator, and potentially a proton beam therapy centre—a first of its kind in Malaysia if realised.
Lau expressed the ambition for SMCD to become an integral part of the Damansara community, offering comprehensive healthcare that meets the evolving needs of its population at every stage of life. This development aligns with broader efforts to position Malaysia as a leading regional hub for advanced medical treatment and innovation.
