Kevin Jennings set a new career touchdown record as Southern Methodist University secured a decisive 59-20 victory over California on Saturday. The No. 23 Mustangs improved to 6-1 overall and 4-1 in the ACC with a strong second-half performance.

Trailing at halftime, SMU surged after the break by scoring touchdowns on each of their first six possessions. Jennings, the third-year starting quarterback, threw three touchdown passes during the game, including a 21-yard completion to Derek McFall that marked the 73rd touchdown pass of his collegiate career, surpassing the previous record held by Tanner Mordecai, who threw 72 from 2021 to 2022. Jennings concluded the scoring with a 17-yard touchdown pass to Jalen Hale with just over six minutes remaining.

In addition to his touchdown record, Jennings continues to lead SMU’s record books with career passing yards totaling 9,766 and 781 completions. Running back Kendrick Raphael also played a pivotal role, rushing for 104 yards and accounting for three touchdowns, two of which came on successful fourth-down plays.

SMU’s offense dominated the second half, overturning the halftime deficit and showcasing a balanced attack. The Mustangs’ ability to convert critical plays on fourth down helped maintain their momentum and build a commanding lead.

California struggled to contain SMU’s offense throughout the game, managing only 20 points. The loss drops the Golden Bears to 2-5 for the season.

SMU will look to maintain its strong standing in the ACC as it approaches the midpoint of the season, relying heavily on Jennings’ leadership and playmaking abilities.
