Wu Yize secured another significant milestone in his snooker career by capturing the Shenzhen Open title on Sunday, reinforcing his status as one of the sport’s rising stars. The 22-year-old Chinese player won the ranking event on home soil just five months after claiming the World Snooker Championship in Sheffield.
In the final, Wu defeated fellow countryman Yuan Sijun with a 10-5 scoreline. The victory earned Wu £177,000 in prize money and helped him narrow the gap to the world’s top-ranked player, Zhao Xintong. This outcome marks a notable consolidation of his standing among the sport’s elite.
Jason Ferguson, chairman of the World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association (WPBSA), praised Wu’s performance, calling it “a magnificent win” and emphasizing that it confirms his credentials as a true champion. Ferguson also noted Wu’s growing popularity, describing him as a burgeoning superstar in China who enjoys strong support from both peers and fans.
Wu’s success at the Shenzhen Open highlights the increasing prominence of Chinese players in the international snooker scene, reflecting the country’s expanding influence in the sport. The triumph adds to Wu’s growing resume and signals a sustained period of high performance following his breakthrough world title earlier this year.
