A Southern California man was killed during last week’s earthquake in Venezuela, according to a fundraising page set up by his family. Romildo Batista de Lima, who was vacationing in Venezuela with his wife, Carlha Nacarid, was fatally injured when a hotel wall collapsed as the tremor struck.

The couple was staying at the hotel when the earthquake occurred. Both were rushed to a hospital following the collapse, but de Lima succumbed to his injuries. Nacarid sustained severe injuries, including a broken leg and hip, and remains hospitalized.

The family has established a GoFundMe campaign to assist with medical and related expenses. As of Tuesday, the fundraiser had raised more than $12,000. The incident has left the family grappling with the sudden loss and ongoing medical concerns stemming from the disaster.
