Socceroos midfielder Paul Okon-Engstler has been confirmed free of any lasting injury following a heavy head collision during Australia's recent match against the United States. The 21-year-old sustained the clash late in the first half but was able to continue playing after receiving on-field treatment, including the application of vaseline to the back of his head.
Speaking to media in Oakland after a light recovery session on Sunday (AEST), Okon-Engstler described the encounter as the most physical he had experienced in his career. "It happened so fast, I didn't really have time to process that really happened," he said, adding that he was fortunate to avoid serious harm.
While Okon-Engstler’s condition offers some relief, concerns remain over the fitness of teammate Mat Leckie. The veteran winger left the field early in the second half with a leg injury, potentially affecting Australia's squad depth. Leckie, who has battled a series of soft tissue injuries in recent years, underwent hip surgery in December and had made a notable recovery ahead of the World Cup.
When asked about Leckie's status, vice-captain Jackson Irvine acknowledged the uncertainty but emphasized the player's value to the team. "I'm not a doctor," Irvine remarked before confirming Leckie attended the recovery session alongside the squad. "We all hope the best for him... he's such an important part and we hope that he can be here among it for as long as possible."
The Australian team will continue to monitor both players as they prepare for upcoming fixtures, with a focus on maintaining player health and readiness.
