Aaron Avery, a 22-year-old worker at SoFi Stadium, was fatally struck by a suspected intoxicated driver last Monday night as he walked home following the FIFA World Cup match between Iran and New Zealand. The incident occurred near Van Ness Avenue, according to Avery’s family.
Avery was just two days into his job at the stadium when the collision happened. He was reportedly wearing dark clothing at the time, and the driver later said visibility was limited due to nighttime conditions. The family expressed concerns that the driver was speeding and under the influence of alcohol.
Emergency responders transported Avery to a hospital in critical condition, where he suffered a traumatic brain injury. Despite medical efforts and being placed on life support, he was pronounced dead the following day.
In the aftermath of the incident, Avery’s family confirmed that he donated multiple organs, including his heart, lungs, liver and kidneys, potentially benefiting up to eight recipients. The family has also established a GoFundMe campaign to assist with medical and funeral expenses, raising over $5,000 to date.
The driver involved was arrested, and the family has called for accountability in connection with the crash. Avery’s aunt, Norma Quinn, described the loss as devastating, emphasizing the impact on their family.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fatal collision.
