Located on the northeastern coast of Moorea, just across the water from Tahiti, the Sofitel Kia Ora Moorea Beach Resort has reopened following an extensive renovation completed in April 2026. The resort, a longstanding landmark since its establishment in 1977, now blends contemporary design with the island’s natural and cultural heritage, aiming to offer an immersive experience that reflects both French elegance and Polynesian tradition.
Situated on Temae Beach, which is widely regarded as Moorea’s longest and most scenic shoreline, the resort features 109 villas categorized as overwater, beachfront, or garden accommodations. Each villa is designed to provide guests with a unique interaction with the island’s surroundings. Notably, the overwater villas allow direct access to the lagoon’s clear waters and incorporate glass panels for marine life observation, underscoring the property’s strong connection to the vibrant coral ecosystem it borders. Behind the resort, volcanic peaks rise sharply, framing the lagoon and adding to the dramatic landscape.
The renovation, overseen by the Wane Group after acquiring the property in 2020, sought to modernize the resort’s spaces while maintaining its distinct identity. Patrice Aira, the resort’s general manager, described the redesign as an effort to elevate details without losing the essence of the site, combining open, fluid indoor-outdoor layouts with natural materials and soft textures. Public areas such as reception, dining, and bars now emphasize a refined but relaxed atmosphere that integrates the surrounding environment.
Wellness is a core element of the guest experience, anchored by Le Jardin Spa & Beauty, which offers Polynesian-inspired treatments including the signature Taurumi massage that utilizes traditional local oils. Fitness and mindfulness are supported through sunrise yoga sessions overlooking the lagoon and a modern exercise facility. The resort promotes a holistic approach aimed at balancing physical renewal and mental relaxation.
Culinary offerings at the resort highlight a fusion of French and Polynesian influences under the direction of Chef Frédéric Gigou. Two main dining venues serve distinct purposes: Pure restaurant provides a casual yet sophisticated setting with views of the lagoon and a menu focused on fresh, local ingredients, while K restaurant offers an elevated gastronomic experience with multi-course tasting menus set beneath a distinctive wooden ceiling made from Kahaia wood. Complementing these are two bars featuring tropical cocktails and light fare, designed to enhance the relaxed island atmosphere.
Beyond the resort, Moorea itself presents diverse opportunities for exploration, including hiking trails, plantations, and marine activities such as snorkeling, paddleboarding, and whale watching during migration season. The island’s unique blend of dramatic volcanic landscapes and calm lagoons fosters a tranquil pace of life that resonates throughout the resort’s ethos.
The staff, primarily composed of local Polynesian team members, plays an integral role in creating an authentic cultural connection for guests. Cultural immersion programs feature traditional dance performances, music, and workshops that celebrate the island’s heritage, allowing visitors to engage with Moorea beyond its natural scenery.
With its recent refurbishment, Sofitel Kia Ora Moorea Beach Resort aims to reaffirm its status as a premier destination in French Polynesia by offering an experience that balances luxury with a deep sense of place, inviting travelers to unwind in an environment where nature and culture intertwine.
