Households in Great Britain’s cloudiest regions could save more than £400 annually on energy bills by installing rooftop solar panels, according to recent research. Despite the country’s variable weather, potential savings have risen in part due to climbing wholesale electricity prices and declining solar panel installation costs, driving increased consumer interest.
An analysis provided by the UK solar company Recharge Renewable found that homes in areas with the fewest sunny days, such as southern Scotland and the north-west of England, could save approximately £440 to £463 per year on average. For example, the estimated annual savings for a household in Glasgow amount to around £440, while those in Manchester could expect around £463. In regions with higher solar generation potential like southern England, annual savings could reach between £571 and £618, with figures for Brighton and Southampton cited at those levels.
The increase in potential savings has been partly influenced by external geopolitical factors, including conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, which have contributed to recent energy price rises in the UK. These conditions, combined with more affordable solar installations, have led to a surge in rooftop solar panel uptake.
Government data indicates that the first half of this year saw more new solar power installations than any six-month period since 2011, the year the UK commissioned its first large-scale solar farm in Cornwall. The majority of these installations have been small-scale rooftop systems, which now constitute nearly one-third of the country’s total solar power capacity.
In July, solar power accounted for 14.4% of Great Britain’s electricity generation—the highest monthly share recorded to date. This surge was influenced by a summer heatwave that brought nearly double the average sunshine hours for that time of year, a phenomenon linked to broader climate change trends.
Under the current Labour government, efforts to expand the UK's solar capacity continue, with aims to triple the number of solar farms by 2030 as part of broader clean energy targets.
Recharge Renewable emphasized that while solar panels offer significant savings potential, the actual benefits depend on careful consideration of each rooftop system’s setup and regional solar conditions. Households are advised to assess these factors to maximize the return on investment from solar power installations.
